About Our Practice - Our History

Hannah & Oltjen Orthodontics is proud of its rich history. In 1959, Dr. Dick Radke, founded the practice in Overland Park, Kansas. Dr. Radke is a pioneer in orthodontics, envisioning many of the changes the industry has come to know. He was the first orthodontist in the Midwest to open a second location, to have an in–house lab, and to offer a speech therapist on staff to treat our patients. Dr. Radke's commitment to an excellent patient experience, however, is what truly set him apart. Many of these principles still guide our practice today, more than 50 years later.

In 1986, Dr. Joe Hannah joined Dr. Radke, followed by Dr. Jay Oltjen in 1994. These doctors are committed to following Dick's lead in finding cutting edge solutions to treatment procedures and customer satisfaction. Utilizing systems like iBraces, TopsOrtho, and OrthoCAD are examples of our doctors commitment to new technologies in orthodontics, aimed at improving results and responding to patient needs.

Timeline of Events

  • 1959–Dr. Dick Radke opens Radke Orthodontics at 60th and Mission
  • 1960–Dr. Radke pioneers first satellite practices in Atchison and Leavenworth
  • 1965–John Brooks, a speech therapist, hired to treat tongue thrust problems
  • 1977–First office to begin in-house lab services
  • 1978–Orthodontic brackets are used for the first time
  • 1980–3rd satellite office opens in Olathe, Kansas at 151st and Ridgeview
  • 1981–Braces behind the teeth used for the first time
  • 1982–Satellite office opens in Emporia, Kansas
  • 1983–Satellite office opens in Lenexa, Kansas
  • 1986–Dr. Joe Hannah joins the practice
  • 1994–Dr. Jay Oltjen joins practice
  • 1994–Dr. Radke retires and Hannah & Oltjen began their partnership
  • 2000–Invisalign system is used for the first time
  • 2003-Office opens at 135th and Lamar in Overland Park
  • 2007-iBraces is used for the first time
  • 2007-Satellite office opens in Paola, Kansas
  • 2008-OrthoCAD-computerized bracket placement-is used for the first time
  • 2009-Conversion to TopsOrtho—the leading MAC based orthodontic software
